What are cookies?

From Wikipedia:
“A cookie, also known as an HTTP cookie, web cookie, or browser cookie, is a small piece of data sent from a website and stored in a user's web browser while the user is browsing that website.”

In short, it is a little bit of data from the website you are visiting which is stored on your computer, or mobile device.

The information in this cookie can, for example, make sure you stay authenticated during your visit, save your preferences or track your dealings during your visit..

Because of a new EU law from 2012 a website sometimes has to ask for your permission to store cookies in your browser on your computer or mobile device.

Functional cookies

Functional cookies are cookies that are essential for the website to work. For example a so called 'session' cookie which makes sure that you don't have to keep logging in on every page you visit, or a cookie that keeps track of your shopping cart on the website.

EU law does not require the website to ask you for permission to place these kind of cookies.
